Sandra Leatherman & Homero Lavernia
Homer Made Custom Drums is owned by husband and wife team, Homero Lavernia and Sandra Leatherman.
As a child, Homero discovered his love for drums by banging on cardboard boxes with a pair of drumsticks. During his teenage years, Homero cultivated a career as a touring drummer and experimented with the customization of his drums by dissecting his kits to fully understand their construction, how to alter the tones and improve aesthetics. Homero received many requests from fellow drummers which is when he realized he enjoyed the creative construction of drums more than playing them. He attended woodworking school where he learned wood science along with a variety of fine woodworking skills and techniques.
Sandra is an artist with a degree in fine art from the University of Florida with concentrations in painting, woodworking, design and color theory. She plays an integral role in the construction of the drum shells and the finishing processes. Sandra picked up some drumsticks and started playing the drums during a medically rocky time of her life and discovered that it helped to relieve stress. In 2014 she joined Homero in his passion for drums.
Homero and Sandra honed their woodworking skills in the rocky mountains of Colorado. Together they made drums in their carport but quickly ran out of workspace and embarked on an ambitious plan to excavate the dirt crawlspace under their home by hand. Seven years later, their basement drum workshop was complete and they began crafting drums full-time. Yet again, Homer Made outgrew their workshop and expanded to Northwest Arkansas where Homer Made Custom Drums currently operates.
Homer Made is determined to set a new standard for quality custom drums. They are recognized in the drum industry for their custom ply shells handmade from scratch, using unique combinations of wood to offer truly customized sound. Along with their superior quality and bangin’ finishes, the Homer Made family formed organically through human connection and experiences. Homer Made Custom Drums donates towards reforestation as their continued commitment to sustainability.
